The Habits of Promotable Employees

Negotiating your career and salary is about you taking control of your life. It’s not only the dollars; it’s you acknowledging your worth, valuing your contribution to your employer and reaffirming your career progression.

Wanting to move up?

A plum new role has been announced and you put your hand up for it. After going through the process, you find your colleague has been appointed to the role. It wouldn’t be so bad if this wasn’t the third time you’ve tried to get a promotion. You’ve been actively seeking growth for some time. It hurts and stings. You can’t work out what habits those promotable employees have.

Let me let you in on the secret sauce on how to get a promotion!

1. Know your brand

What are people saying about you when you’re not in the room? If you don’t know, then you aren’t in control of your brand. So how do you sort that out? Work out what you want to be known for. Start contemplating it. You can’t be all things to all people, so pick the things that resonate the most. Perhaps you want to be known as the million-dollar salesperson, or the kaleidoscope advertiser – the person who can turn a campaign into perfection with small changes. Maybe you are the kaizen expert who brings lean to lean organisations. You could be the unraveller of business issues, using your analytical and problem-solving capabilities. No matter what it is for you, it must be crisp and clear. Easy for someone else to use, without them knowing that’s what you want them to be saying about you, when you’re not in the room.

2. Actively seek out mentoring

The chances are your colleague who got the job actively seeks mentoring. This is not to be underestimated. Mentors bring a wealth of knowledge and know-how to the mentoring relationship. Be the one who actively seeks growth by having two or more mentors. Make sure to meet regularly and have specific questions you want answered in the conversation.

Get in touch with me or sign-up to my online programs. You need someone in your camp who understands what you are going through and can support you through the process. The coaching and the online program offer that.

3. Network

Another habit of promotable employees is to have a strong and positive network. Make sure you connect with people who you can give to and vice-versa. It should always be a two-way relationship, trusting, open, honest and supportive.

4. Set and exceed targets

All jobs have targets. Whatever your targets are be sure to meet and preferably exceed them – consistently. This will serve as the back-up for your brand. Substantiation of value. I recommend keeping track of those achievements and value statements and being able to articulate them concisely and with clarity.

When you come to coaching or take our online Know Your Worth program, you learn how to do all of this and keep track in the best way possible. When it comes time to ask for a promotion again, you will be really well prepared!
